Across the lake to the west is Coniston Village, overlooked by the 2500ft summit of Coniston Old Man and surrounding fells. To the north is Tarn Hows, a famous Lakeland beauty spot. To the East and adjoining Bank Ground is Grizdale forest where you could walk all day without seeing anyone. Along the lakeshore road south is Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin, the famous 19th century painter, writer and politician.
